line of action

The line of action of a force is the line along which that force acts. In a diagram in which the force is represented by an arrow drawn with solid line segments, use a dashed line to extend the shaft of the arrow to the edge of the paper in both directions. The dashed line, including where it passes through the arrow representing the force, is the line of action of the force. It extends to infinity in both directions.
